The concern

Breakouts are rarely as simple as “oily skin”.

Acne and congestion can be influenced by oil production, blocked follicles, inflammation, hormones, products, stress and the health of the skin barrier.

The right treatment plan begins by understanding which of these factors may be relevant to your skin.

At neoSKiN in South Melbourne, we assess active breakouts, blackheads, congestion, sensitivity and the marks or texture left behind. From there, we create a staged plan designed to calm the skin first, support clearer-looking skin over time and reduce the risk of unnecessary irritation.

What shapes the plan.

What does acne-prone or congested skin look like?

Acne can present differently from person to person. You may notice:

  • Blackheads, whiteheads or persistent congestion
  • Inflamed spots or recurring breakouts
  • Excess oil alongside surface dehydration
  • Breakouts across the face, jawline, chest, shoulders or back
  • Red or brown marks after blemishes settle
  • Uneven texture or acne scarring

Active acne, post-acne marks and established scarring are different concerns. They often need different treatment methods and should not automatically be treated at the same time.

What can influence breakouts?

Hormonal changes, genetics, stress, medication, occlusive products, friction and an unsuitable skin routine can all contribute. Over-cleansing or using too many strong active products may also disrupt the skin barrier and make inflamed skin harder to manage.

We will ask about how your skin behaves, your current products, previous treatment and relevant health information. We do not diagnose medical conditions, and severe, painful or rapidly worsening acne may require assessment by a GP or dermatologist.

How we approach acne treatment

Your plan is selected according to whether the priority is active inflammation, congestion, post-breakout discolouration or scarring.

Suitable options may include:

  • Neo Facials for cleansing, appropriate exfoliation, extractions and barrier support
  • Peels and resurfacing to support cell turnover and address suitable congestion or post-breakout marks
  • LED light therapy as a gentle option within plans for visible inflammation and recovery
  • BBL Forever Clear for eligible clients with active acne
  • Dermapen skin needling once active breakouts are controlled and suitable scarring becomes the priority
  • Professional home care selected to support the skin between appointments

More treatment is not always better. When skin is inflamed or sensitised, the first step may be a calmer routine and a gradual treatment plan.

What results can I expect?

Acne treatment is usually a process rather than a single appointment. Skin response is influenced by the type of breakout, underlying triggers, consistency and any medical factors.

Your clinician will explain which changes the proposed treatment can reasonably address and when progress should be reviewed.

Our aim is steady, visible improvement without promising perfectly clear skin or overlooking the need for medical care.

Caring for acne-prone skin at home

A consistent routine often matters more than a complicated one. We may recommend gentle cleansing, non-comedogenic hydration, selected active ingredients and daily broad-spectrum SPF. Avoid picking or squeezing blemishes, as this can increase inflammation and the likelihood of lingering marks or scars.

FAQs
Should I book a facial if I have active acne?

Possibly. The right facial can support cleansing, congestion and barrier health, but aggressive exfoliation may not suit inflamed or sensitised skin. Start with an assessment so the treatment can be adapted.

Can LED help acne-prone skin?

LED may be used as part of a broader acne plan for suitable clients. It does not replace medical care, and the wavelength, frequency and expected role should be explained before treatment.

Can acne scarring be treated while I am still breaking out?

Controlling active inflammation usually comes first. Scar-focused treatments such as skin needling may be considered later, depending on the scar type and condition of your skin.

When should I see a doctor about acne?

Seek medical advice if acne is severe, painful, rapidly worsening, causing significant scarring or affecting your wellbeing. We will recommend referral when treatment falls outside our scope.
